Pimentel on why PDP expelled Pacquiao: Just their imagination

October 4, 2021

Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel on Sunday, 3 October, dismissed the “expulsión” of Sen. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) by the party’s rival wing led by Energy Sec. Alfonso Cusi over alleged violations of the party’s constitution.

“So easy to explain. Cusi and (Melvin) Matibag do not know the facts. There is a PDP Laban, Promdi ( Progressive Movement for the Devolution of Initiatives) , PCM (People’s Champ Movement) alliance agreement called “MP3 Alliance” where the partners also proclaimed Sen. Pacquiao as their presidential candidate,” Pimentel commented in a statement issued to media.

“PDP Laban National Executive Committee in a Resolution (No. 12) allowed Sen. Pacquiao to use the Promdi CONA ( Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance) in order to consolidate his support base and alliance partners because Sen. Pacquiao is already known and identified with PDP Laban” said Pimentel.

“He was officially nominated and proclaimed as presidential candidate also by Promdi in their National Assembly. Hence, everything is normal and in order per our party constitution.”

“The ‘issue’ being propagated by Cusi and Matibag is a figment of their imagination which they want to use for their own political propaganda,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the Cusi wing expelled Pacquiao from the party for allegedly violating Section 6, Article VII of PDP-Laban’s Constitution after Pacquiao filed his certificate for candidacy (COC) for president under Promdi.

Lawyer Melvin Matibag, secretary general of the party’s Cusi wing, said it is a ground for automatic expulsion as the provision prohibits members from filing a COC “under the auspices of another political party.”

“Sen. Pacquiao claims he is the legitimate president of PDP Laban and even called his own national assembly where he accepted the party’s so-called proclamation as presidential candidate, and yet he is running for president under Promdi. Let’s call a spade a spade. If that is not disloyalty, betrayal, and abandonment of PDP Laban, I don’t know what is,” Matibag said.
